CONTEXT: In-house design team, H&M Studio
FOCUS: Timeless accessory design balancing functionality, longevity, and Studio brand expression
The Project
Project overview
H&M Studio Essentials SS26 focused on creating a refined core wardrobe built around longevity, versatility, and everyday relevance. The objective was to develop accessories that complemented the Essentials garments while maintaining a clear Studio identity.
As Senior Product Designer for accessories, I was responsible for translating the Essentials philosophy into a cohesive accessory range that felt elevated yet approachable, with an emphasis on function, proportion, and material integrity.
My Role & Responsibilities
My role & responsibilities
I worked with a high level of creative ownership across the accessory category, including:
Interpreting the Essentials concept into functional, long-lasting accessory designs
Defining shape, proportion, and material direction aligned with Studio standards
Ensuring balance between design expression, wearability, and commercial requirements
Refining products through internal feedback, fitting, and iteration
Design Notes
Design approach
The design approach centered on restraint and purpose. Rather than creating statement pieces, the focus was on designing accessories that could integrate seamlessly into daily wear while subtly reinforcing the Studio aesthetic.
Key considerations included:
Prioritizing functionality and comfort
Designing proportions that work across different styling contexts
Creating accessories that feel relevant beyond a single season
Material choices were driven by durability, tactility, and ease of use, supporting the idea of Essentials as long-term wardrobe components.
Challenges & considerations
Designing for an Essentials collection requires precision and discipline, as simplicity leaves little room for unnecessary elements.
Key challenges included:
Creating accessories that feel elevated while remaining understated
Balancing minimal expression with practical functionality
Working within defined cost frameworks without compromising perceived quality
These constraints helped shape focused design solutions aligned with both brand values and commercial realities.
Final outcome
The final accessory range supported the SS26 Essentials collection by providing functional, refined pieces that enhanced everyday wear. The accessories contributed to a cohesive Studio expression while remaining adaptable across seasons and styling needs.
Learnings
This project reinforced the value of intentional simplicity. By prioritizing clarity, function, and material quality, the design process resulted in accessories that feel enduring rather than trend-driven.
